9th June 2013 - A multi-award winning TechCity based start-up, named Eyetease, has announced today an exclusive deal with global media giant Verifone Media (a subsidiary of Verifone, Inc.). The deal signals the beginning of a roll-out in London of a disruptive new digital media format, named the iTaxitop, which delivers targeted digital media content from the roofs of taxis to city dwellers.

The deal between Verifone Media and Eyetease sparks the start of a new role for the iconic London black cab by becoming a new communications tool for the City of London. Aside from digital media content, Londoners can expect to see the latest news stories, public information and transport updates broadcast in real-time from the roofs of taxis. This innovative taxi media system enables new content to be deployed to the roofs of taxis, via wireless connectivity, and displayed with time specific and geographic accuracy. The first network of iTaxitops are scheduled for launch by Verifone Media in London this Summer, marking a European industry first for this new format.

Eyetease, creators of the iTaxitop, have dedicated almost four years to develop the world’s first mass production digital taxitop technology approved in over 50 countries. Ranked in the top 20 UK tech start-ups, Eyetease has overcome significant technical and legislative barriers to create this proprietary and patented technology. The iTaxitop integrates proprietary thermal, power and vibration management systems, with HD screens, GPS and wireless technology to deliver a robust system able to withstand 24/7 road usage for up to 5 years. And best of all, its made in Britain and London will lead the way with the first launch of this new media format.

Over recent years, Verifone Media has aggressively expanded its taxi media business in North America and Europe. Forming part of a $2bn turnover company, Verifone Media controls the media on over 45,000 taxis making them the world’s largest media owner in this sector. In London, Verifone Media manages over 8,000 taxis, including a combination of taxi wrap advertising, payment terminals and digital screens installed inside the taxi – offering a unique narrowcast opportunity to passengers. The recent deal with Eyetease is yet another investment in Verifone Media’s digital media network and promises to turn this innovative new technology into a mass-market media format and a common feature in big city landscapes.

Eyetease Founder and CEO, Richard Corbett, mentions “its an honour to work with the global leaders in taxi media. Verifone’s experience, network and reputation in the industry is second to none and I’m thrilled to be working with them.” Mr Corbett also admits “my journey began in late 2009 when I was researching the market and wanted to understand if a product (like the iTaxitop) would be of interest to Verifone. Their response was positive and almost four years later we signed a deal!”

Verifone Taxi & Media Solutions VP & General Manager, Mark Roberts comments “the iTaxitop is a game changer in the outdoor media market, bringing the power of online to an offline environment.” Mr Roberts goes on to say “VeriFone is no stranger to rolling-out innovative taxi technology in London.  Over the past two years, VeriFone has transformed thousands of licensed taxis with new payment technology and in-cab entertainment and many more with bespoke livery and wraps.”

The new digital taxitop technology adopted by Verifone Media will provide brands with a new channel of communication with the public in areas where no other format can reach. Mr Corbett concludes “every street in London will soon become an exciting, targeted and relevant point of communication with consumers.” Designed, developed and built in Britain, the new digital media format is anticipated to hit the streets of London this summer by Verifone Media, marking a European industry first and an exciting new chapter in UK outdoor media.
