Eyetease Media, the market leader in digital broadcast technology for mass city transit, today announced that the iTaxitop 2.0 is to be unveiled to the public at this year’s Screen Media Expo, Earls Court, on the 16th and 17th May 2012. To celebrate the arrival of this new Digital-Out-Of-Home (DOOH) format, Eyetease Media will be showcasing at Screen Media Expo the iTaxitop 2.0 on top of two of the world’s most iconic taxis – the London Cab and the New York Cab.

The iTaxitop 2.0 offers brands 30% more advertising real estate and 20% brighter screens than the iTaxitop 1.0, which was exhibited at Screen Media Expo 2011 (on a Mini Cooper). The new system builds upon extensive research conducted by Eyetease Media with brands and leading out-of- home media agencies.

Packed with a whole box of new tricks, the iTaxitop 2.0 boasts a new power management, thermal management and vibration management system to ensure the system can endure 5 years of 24/7 road usage.

Eyetease Media has dedicated over 2 years of R&D to develop the iTaxitop which is now the world’s first digital taxitop to pass all EU and UN-ECE technical and safety standards. Although the company is based in the UK, initial trials are set to commence in several major cities in the USA and Canada from May 2012 onwards.

Richard Corbett, CEO of Eyetease Media, said; “Taxis spend on average 95% of their time in city centres and present advertisers with the ideal platform to advertise from. Current taxi media formats are untargeted and inefficient. In general, OOH is losing precious advertising dollars to more targeted mobile and online media formats. The iTaxitop 2.0 presents brands with a real opportunity to bring back relevancy to the OOH media sector. The iTaxitop will turn each and every taxi into the world’s most advanced OOH media platform. Are you ready?”

Corbett will also be talking at this year’s Screen Media Expo Education Programme on the 17th May 2012 at 10am.

Notes to the Editor

Eyetease Media:

Founded in February 2010, Eyetease Media is a high growth tech start-up based in London. The company has developed Europe’s first digital taxitop and is the first to install this new advertising medium to the iconic London Taxi.

The iTaxitop is a double-sided digital advertising platform that sits on the roof of a taxi. The stretched high brightness LED backlit LCD screens play high definition adverts to the public. Adapting the traditional ‘New York’ style taxitop concept, the iTaxitop is a new mobile digital broadcast solution for mass inner-city transit.

Designed predominately for roll-out across taxis in major cities, the iTaxitop plays time specific and geographically accurate adverts which are scheduled remotely from a computer and then deployed using 3G connectivity. The iTaxitop uses GPS technology to support location specific advertising.

Richard Corbett, CEO of Eyetease Media, added: “Eyetease Media has championed a new advertising medium for the UK Out-Of-Home (OOH) market. The iTaxitop provides advertisers with a highly targeted, flexible and accountable medium to manage campaigns for their clients. Designed to function on all vehicle types, in all weather and ambient light conditions, the iTaxitop provides an eye-catching, reliable and effective advertising medium that will cut through the big city noise and deliver relevant digital advertising messages to the masses.

Eyetease Media reached the finals of the 2012 EMEA InAVation Awards for ‘Most inAVative Digital Signage Product’. Eyetease is also a proud ‘Partner’ with Ogilvy Digital Labs in London.

Cabby and Entrepreneur Karl James puts the CabWifi proposition through its paces. Find out what he thought here! Read more →

Eyetease® was honoured to have its first ‘Taxi Celebrity’ in the back of our taxi earlier this week. Mr Karl James, Co-founder of Tweet-a-London-Taxi (with over 20,000 Twitter followers!), the TLC Taxi App and a licensed taxi driver for over 11 years, has a keen eye for technology and its benefits to the Cab trade. Mr James is actively involved in a range of key initiatives within the Cab trade and was the perfect man to call up to road test our latest gadget – CabWifi™.

Mr James admits, “I was honoured to be asked to try out and test CabWifi on the 3rd April 2012 by Eyetease Limited. They have devised and produced a system bringing full high speed wifi into the London taxi and effectively turning the world famous London black cab into a wifi hot spot, which is great news!” He goes on to say, “for the taxi travelling public, giving them (for the first time) free and unfettered wifi access is a huge step forward for London.”

The Test:

Eyetease was keen to see what Mr James thought of the latest CabWifi solution soon to be introduced to the City of London. And what better way to test CabWifi than to surf the web whilst being chauffeured by Eyetease Limited’s very own CEO, Richard Corbett? Mr James mentions, “I rode in back of the CabWifi fitted taxi around the City and East London for half an hour – an unusual experience for me not being the cabby in the front! Playing the part of a passenger, I quickly logged in using my iPad and iPhone, saw a 15 second ad on each (this short ad basically pays for the whole service) then voila! I was online, browsing, tweeting etc. I then began the ultimate test and opened the Sky News App for iPad and ran a live news tv feed – all completely uninterrupted and crystal clear in HD clarity whilst being driven around.”

Why CabWifi?

Eyetease’s taxi wifi proposition solves several issues associated with mobile wifi connectivity including functioning within man-made chasms (i.e. between high rise buildings) and wifi whilst in motion.

So why would anyone want wifi access whilst in a Taxi? Furthermore, why would someone want Wifi access when they can use 3G on their phones? Simple! Eyetease believe there are 9 excellent reasons for introducing this new service to taxis:

CabWifi has a faster and stronger connection to the internet (up to 7Mbps) than using your phone

Most mobile phone contracts do not offer ‘all-you-can-eat’ data plans – often restricted to 1GB – meaning consumers are evermore conscious of their monthly bills when using data hungry applications

Works on any wifi enabled device – tablets, laptops, book readers, everything!

No need for a dongle for your laptop

Taxi drivers can benefit from uninterrupted access – meaning they can offset their data usage on data hungry applications, such as Taxi Apps!

Tourists using a black cab can use skype and call home, send emails, etc… all without incurring high data roaming charges. There you go Boris, another great service for this great city!

Its 100% free – funded through an Ads-For-Access model – simply watch a short Ad and then access the internet. Similar approach used with online sites including Spotify and YouTube.

CabWifi gives the public another great reason to travel in a London Black Cab

Takes 2mins to install – no lengthy set up!

Supporting Data:

A study conducted by Ubiquitous, involving 517 taxi passengers, and publicised 29th March 2012 in The Drum uncovers some excellent data regarding consumer behaviour trends whilst travelling in taxis.

Key Findings:

79% of passengers admitted they would like to be able to easily identity taxis which offer free wi-fi while hailing them

There is a tremendous opportunity for major operators and technology companies to associate their brand themselves with these SOS services and help consumers re-energise and re-connect at a moment of need.”

91% of passengers use their handsets during a taxi journey, 84% of passengers check their emails and 60% check their Facebook

Availability of technology on the go is of growing importance.

Andrew Barnett, Managing Director of Ubiquitous, commented: “Mobile phones running out of batteries, or failing to get a decent mobile connection when out and about, are pains suffered by busy consumers and business people up and down the country. For this reason, taxi passengers are understandably keen to benefit from the innovations in in-cab technologies, be it to charge their smartphone to make an important call or access the internet to search for crucial information or download emails.”

Andrew, we would have to agree with you!

Final Verdict:

Following our CabWifi trial with Mr James, we think his final verdict says it all – “Riding in a London black cab will never be the same again!”

The iTaxitop underwent several major changes over the last year – the most noticeable of which (from the outside) are larger and higher brightness screens! But as your mother always told you, it is whats on the inside that counts. The iTaxitop version 2 now has a new and improved thermal management, power management and vibration management system to ensure it can ride out the peaks and troughs of any road in any weather condition. A highly rugidised system designed to withstand 24/7 usage over a minimum of 5 years, is now certified for usage on any vehicle within the EU and UN-ECE (including USA and Canada).

With a brief intro to the history of taxitop advertising, we ask the question, in a world of ‘connected audiences’ with iphones and ipads, how will Out-Of Home (OOH) media and taxitop media in particular adapt? Is ‘digital’ the way forwards? Find out below!

Taxitop History

Taxitop advertising is a common feature of many cities around the world. Born in the USA in 1976, the taxitop has graced our streets for decades ever since. The taxitop concept is simple – use taxis to get your advertising messages to the masses. Taxis by their very nature are always near to high volumes of people and therefore present an excellent mobile billboard for advertisers – notably at a fraction of the cost of inner city road side billboards.

Taxitop advertising for many years has maintained its shape and style, using a backlit ‘toblerone’ shaped enclosure with printed ads placed on top. Many have tried to change the shape of the taxitop, but few have succeeded. Having said this, Show Media, successfully launched in 2010 their ‘High Impact taxitops’ in New York, with a unique style and design – characterised by an Apple iPod style thin wraparound brushed metal bezel.

These high impact tops added an additional 30% addressable advertising real estate to the previous taxitop with a whopping 17.5”H x 54”W compared to the previous 14”H x 48”W. Since Show Media’s sale of their taxi media network to Verifone Media in 2011, the high impact taxitops have gone from strength to strength, becoming increasingly more visible in major cities in the USA.

Taxitop Benefits

Taxitop advertising is a highly desirable format for brands to communicate with the public. In cities such as London and New York, the taxi carries a unique and iconic look and shape, which brands are keen to be associated with and pay a premium for.

The position of the taxitop, on the roof of the taxi, provides an optimal viewing height for people on the street. Unlike the British ‘taxi supersides’ concept, positioned on the lower half of the vehicle under the windows, the taxitop medium is visible at eye level and can even be seen in peak traffic above the roofs of other vehicles.

In addition, unlike traditional taxi vinyl, the taxitop medium is backlit enabling full visibility of ads in day time and night time.

Having said this, unlike static roadside advertising, taxitop media is restricted by size of addressable ad space and dwell time of consumers. These 2 factors result in a completely new communications strategy when dealing with taxitops. Messages must be bold, short and to the point. They must be instantly recognisable and ensure that in one snap shot, the consumer is able to digest the information quickly.

The Future of Taxitop Media

The OOH sector as a whole is under immense pressure from brands to deliver more intelligent and targeted campaigns to the public. The overall aim, as always, is to increase likelihood of conversion from ‘awareness’ to ‘transaction’ in the product being advertised. The more relevant your advert is to the public, the more likely you will engage with the consumer and the more likely for this “conversion”.

Brand expectations are evermore increased by the features available to them in the mobile and online world of media. The ability to track users and tailor adverts to the individual is all the more available to brands today – features they have grown accustomed to using and are starting to demand in the offline world.

Taxitop media falls within the OOH sector and is also under pressure to match the benefits of online in an offline environment. To ensure taxi media and OOH in general remains competitive, it is key to understand the role “out of home” plays in the overall media landscape.

The key question in this article is that in a world where audiences carry their own personal digital screen wherever they go, how does taxitop media add value to the consumer’s life?

In summary, taxitop media can be treated as a ‘prompt’ for connected audiences to navigate both online and offline. These prompts may be a simple brand awareness exercise or involve a more engaging experience, involving a call to action. Ensuring each of these prompts are relevant to the audience is key. Rest assured, the more relevant the prompt to the connected audience, the more likely for a response. Today’s connected audiences have the power to instantaneously engage with this prompt using their mobile device.

As an industry we must identify methods that complement the user’s habits and does not fight against them. In an effort to meet this growing market demand for more targeted campaigns, ‘DIGITAL’ taxitop media plays a key role in bridging the gap between the mobile, online and offline world.

For digital taxitop advertising to interact and engage with today’s connected audiences, each prompt must be relevant. By relevant, we mean in harmony with the audience’s mindset and journey. The more we are able to do this, the more integral our role will be in the media landscape. Digital taxitops present a number of ways to ensure that these prompts are more relevant (and therefore more effective) than traditional taxitop advertising or taxi vinyl.

In reference to Eyetease Media’s digital taxitop, named the iTaxitop™, this new way of advertising on taxis ensures relevancy of each prompt through syncing the advertisements with the audience’s mindset and journey. Adverts are targeted by both time of day and location. Adding movement to digital screens on the roof of taxis, presents a series of interesting applications and benefits to brands and consumers.

Using this highly adaptive digital broadcast medium, enables the iTaxitop to play out the right prompt to the right audience at the right place and time. This of course, is not a simple task and involves an evolutionary approach to advertising. The term AI (artificial intelligence) often synonymous with computers and robotics can be applied to advertising with what Eyetease like to call ‘Advertising Intelligence’. As media owners, it is our role to ensure that these prompts continue to resonate with connected audiences and are validated. Introducing the appropriate call to action is key. Connected audiences are equipped to respond, under the right terms. If we can get this right, we have a powerful means of closing the loop between the online and offline ecosystem of the connected audience.

Introducing CabWifi™ - free high speed internet connection for taxi drivers and passengers on the go. AND a new 'narrow-cast' medium for brands in London. Read more →

Following over 2 years of development of the iTaxitop™, a new high impact way of advertising on taxis in London, the team at Eyetease Media have developed a standalone wifi proposition. Named, CabWifi™, the in-taxi wifi proposition provides drivers and passengers with free access to wifi internet whilst the taxi is in operation.

Connect to Spotify and listen to music, connect to your Hailo App and pick up new business, browse the internet whilst parked up at a rank…CabWifi is a fast and free connection, to reward drivers and passengers for their time on the road. CabWifi also gives the public another great reason to ride in a London Black Taxi and not any other!

But “whats the catch” I hear you cry! Nothing at all, in fact the service couldn’t be simpler. Eyetease Media are operating an ‘Ads-for-access” model for passengers travelling in the back of the CabWifi enabled taxi. Passengers will be greeted by stickers inside the vehicle, informing them of free access to wifi. Once they select the CabWifi network on their device (mobile phone, laptop, iPad, Kindle etc…) they will be prompted to watch a short advert – lasting anywhere between 15-30seconds. Once finished, the internet is unlocked and they’re ready to surf the web! Note, drivers will be able to access the internet at all times, using a unique and separate login.

Notoriously, wifi access in public hotspot areas have been plagued by lengthy login processes and a request for credit card payment before allowing you to proceed. Eyetease Media believe the future is free…the future is CabWifi. Its time for a new and exciting way to bring internet access to the masses!

CEO, Richard Corbett, admits “this is the first service of its kind in the UK taxi market and we’re trying to break new boundaries with the service! Using a model that works well for successful brands such as Youtube and Spotify, the ads-for-access model gives us the opportunity to fund a high speed free wifi service for taxi drivers and the public. In addition, brands will be presented with a new high impact narrow-cast opportunity to passengers travelling in a London taxi – watch an ad, play an interactive game, download a voucher – the choice is yours!”

As of the date of this article, the taxi trade have voted with their hands and tweets with over 100 new followers in less than 24 hours!

Top tweets of the day:

@LondonTaxi – “Want free WiFi in your cab? Follow @CabWifi for more information #taxidriveressentials”

@skkthfc61 – “@CabWifi At first glance seems like a winner”

@andycannell – “Looking forward to finding out more about @CabWifi could help us guys using Hailo”

In honour of this great sport and great evening of entertainment, we've selected a few adverts which caught our eye over here at Eyetease HQ. Read more →

Every year the advertising industry (and consumers) across the globe turn their eyes to the USA for the biggest annual sporting event – the Super Bowl! For many Brits, the sport is still a mystery. Some may even pass it off as Rugby with lots and lots of padding (so the players don’t ruin their modelling career / sponsorship deals!). Whatever your thoughts are towards the game, it is hard to deny the sport is very entertaining and produces some of the most talked about advertising campaigns. With each 30 second slot costing in excess of $3.5m, its amongst one of the highest cost per million slots in the world. As such, brands are under immense pressure to deliver successful adverts that engages, builds awareness and (more importanly) entertains the consumer!

In honour of this great sport and great evening of entertainment, we’ve selected a few adverts which caught our eye over here at Eyetease HQ.

Dannon – When Harry met Sally’s fist (Eyetease Rating: 4 / 10)

Dannon uses a helping of humour and domestic violence to portray the love for their new yoghurt enjoyed by the American public. With close to 800k hits on YouTube this week, the feedback from the public is ‘hard hitting’ to say the least (pardon the pun). Also, further rumours that the backing track (John Butler’s Zebra song) was used without the consent of the artist or management company are starting to build up on the Youtube page. Viewers of this advert will be pleased to know that no models, actors or animals were injured during the making of this video. See what you think: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=y59VUQxX3Dk (<–right click link and open in new tab).

Fiat – The seductive powers of the new Fiat Abarth (Eyetease Rating: 8/10)

Fiat do an excellent job of introducing a generous helping of sex appeal to the new Fiat 500 Abarth. The advert, appropriately named ‘Seduction’, clearly demonstrates the powerfully flirtatious (yet aggressive) seductive powers of the new Fiat – depicted by a rather charming looking Italian woman. For those young boy racers out there, this advert will make you sit up, pay attention and entice you to want to buy a new Abarth. Mine is already on order! Check out the full advert here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=cpi2IAec9Ho (<–right click link and open in new tab).

ACURA – Seinfeld versus Leno (Eyetease Rating: 9/10)

For those Seinfeld fans out there (and basically anyone with a sense of humour), you’ll love this short commercial from Acura which uses lines from previous Seinfeld shows to tell a story of one man (i.e. Jerry Seinfeld) fighting to be the first man to buy the new Acura NSX sports car. The commercial includes the ‘last living Munchkin’, a ‘Soup Nazi’, an Alien, ziplines, speedboats, dirty limericks in front of Gran…oh and Jay Leno in a jet pack flying squirrel suit! All under 1 minute. Very entertaining! http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=YOL22euixuA (<–right click link and open in new tab).

On Sunday 15th January, Eyetease Media had the honour of being invited to support The London Taxi Drivers’ Fund for Underprivileged Children (LTFUC), at their Annual ‘Madhatter Tea Party’ event in Grosvenor House Marriott Hotel, Park Lane.

Several hundred children and teams of support workers made their way to Grosvenor House, Park Lane to attend the highlight in their social calender. With lots of yummy party food, clowns, music, dancing and entertainment from live acts including Diversity and The Cheeky Girls, the event was a great success – enjoyed by all!

Eyetease Media’s CEO added “working with the team at the LTFUC was a very humbling experience. I’ve never seen anyone work as hard, with such dedication, energy and enthusiasm as the members of the LTFUC…these taxi drivers are unsung heroes in my opinion and I would relish the opportunity to work alongside them again for such a worthwhile cause!”

A special shout out goes to Alan Cohen MBE (the project organiser) for finding Eyetease Media online and contacting us! We wouldn’t have missed it for the world!

And of course, we couldn’t go to such a great event without getting involved in some of the festivities….

The LTFUC is completely funded through the donations made by the public and the taxi drivers involved in the charity. Please help the LTFUC keep doing what they’re doing by making a donation through their website: http://www.thelondontaxidriverschildrenscharity.co.uk/?p=Make+a+Donation.

Thank you!

As another year draws to an end, we look back at 2011 and reflect on what has been a great year filled with lots of cheeky ‘eyeteasing’ with a little help from the iTaxitop™.

In January, Eyetease Media kicked off the year by being featured in two articles in the DailyDOOH. The first article titled “Dude What Have You Done With My Mini Cooper” introduced the iTaxitop to international DOOH. The second article, “Are We Gonna See this At ScreenMedia Expo?” brought to light Eyetease Media’s meeting with ScreenMedia’s Mark Pigou and speculated whether the iTaxitop™ would be on display at the upcoming Screen Media Expo 2011 at Earls Court. As we all know, Eyetease Media was most definitely at the Expo, which helped establish the company as the world’s number one manufacturer of digital rooftop advertising solutions for taxis. To read a full report on the expo from Eyetease Media, click here!

Throughout the month of November, Eyetease Media had the pleasure of working with AKA and the team at Billy Elliot to trial the iTaxitop. The trial provided both Eyetease Media and AKA with the opportunity to test the iTaxitop and gauge impact of this new advertising medium. Simon Delany, Client Services Director at AKA mentions: “As the leading marketing agency for live entertainment, we are always looking for new and exciting ways to promote our clients and shows to the largest possible audience. A large part of this challenge is finding new platforms and media to provide the maximum impact for our clients, and the iTaxitop is one such fantastic opportunity. We’re delighted that Billy Elliot was able to be there first with this new initiative, and we will continue to consider the iTaxitop as a part of our outdoor campaigns throughout the year ahead.” A spokesperson from Eyetease Media mentions, “we are writing the rule book with the iTaxitop as we launch a new and disruptive advertising medium to the UK market…this form of digital broadcast medium has not been done before with taxis in the UK and working with prestigious brands, such as Billy Elliot and the team at AKA, will help us move one step closer to defining a robust and compelling proposition, for brands and agencies to enjoy for many years to come.”

And last but not least, on the 24th November 2011, Eyetease Media’s iTaxitop was shortlisted for the EMEA inAVation awards 2012 under the category ‘Most inAVative Digital Signage Product’. Eyetease and other finalists have now been entered into an online voting poll, where the industry and general public can vote for their favourite digital signage proposition. Voting will close on Sunday 15th of January 2012, and the winners announced on Wednesday 1st February at ISE 2012 in Amsterdam. For those who have yet to vote or are still undecided, the Eyetease team have pulled together a TOP 5 list of reasons why we think the iTaxitop should win:

Introducing and championing a highly disruptive advertising medium to an established UK OOH market.

Adding value to an under-utilised and potentially high impact medium, the taxi, which spends over 95% of its time in city centres.

Integrating the latest high brightness screen technology, 3G and GPS into a vehicle based / broadcast environment to deliver high impact, relevant and targeted campaigns.

A robust and fit-for-purpose mobile digital broadcast solution for mass inner-city transit, which introduces new and fresh thinking to previous technical obstacles associated with vehicle based solutions, such as weight, power consumption, thermal management, vibration, moisture ingress, security and vandalism, road safety and legislation.

The iTaxitop plays adverts with time specific and geographic accuracy. Schedule adverts remotely from your computer and deploy using 3G connectivity.

And as the great Steve Jobs used to say, theres just “one more thing”…free in-cab wifi for the public travelling in the Taxi, providing a new high impact narrow-casting opportunity for brands – which will talk to their own digital screens (i.e. mobile phones, laptops, iPads, Kindles, etc…). You will find Eyetease in group 5!

Today, the iTaxitop is fully tested and certified to UK and International safety and technical standards for a vehicle based application. Throughout the year, Eyetease Media has championed a new advertising medium for the UK OOH market. The company has pushed for change in UK regulations to enable rooftop advertising to be approved in the City of London. Introducing digital technology to an outdoor / vehicle based environment has been a momentous task, which many companies have tried and failed in the past. The iTaxitop introduces new and fresh thinking to previous problems, with its market leading vibration mounting, thermal management and power management system to ensure the product has a minimum 5 year lifespan. Developing a new and disruptive advertising medium in a harsh vehicle based environment has not been without its challenges. The company has had to overcome significant technical obstacles and limitations including weight, height, power consumption, thermal management and heat dissipation, vibration, moisture ingress, security and vandalism, road safety and legislation, to produce the world’s most advanced mass city transit broadcasting medium.
